           MistressAffery,whostoodatthetablenearhim,pouringoutthetea,happenedinherdreamystatetolookathimashesaidthesewords,andtofancythatshecaughtanexpressioninhiseyeswhichattractedherowneyessothatshecouldnotgetthemaway.Theeffectofthisfancywastokeepherstaringathimwiththetea-potinherhand,notonlytoherowngreatuneasiness,butmanifestlytohis,too;and,throughthemboth,toMrsClennam’sandMrFlintwinch’s.Thusafewghostlymomentssupervened,whentheywereallconfusedlystaringwithoutknowingwhy.

           ‘Affery,’hermistresswasthefirsttosay,‘whatisthematterwithyou?’

           ‘Idon’tknow,’saidMistressAffery,withherdisengagedlefthandextendedtowardsthevisitor.‘Itain’tme.It’shim!’

           ‘Whatdoesthisgoodwomanmean?’criedMrBlandois,turningwhite,hot,andslowlyrisingwithalookofsuchdeadlywraththatitcontrastedsurprisinglywiththeslightforceofhiswords.‘Howisitpossibletounderstandthisgoodcreature?’

           ‘It’snotpossible,’saidMrFlintwinch,screwinghimselfrapidlyinthatdirection.‘Shedon’tknowwhatshemeans.She’sanidiot,awandererinhermind.
