           Underthelattergreatwrong,afewsuffereddreadfully—particularlyonSundays,whentheyhadforsometimeexpectedtheearthtoopenandswallowthepublicup;butwhichdesirableeventhadnotyetoccurred,inconsequenceofsomereprehensiblelaxityinthearrangementsoftheUniverse.

           MrsGowan’sdoorwasattendedbyafamilyservantofseveralyears’standing,whohadhisowncrowtopluckwiththepublicconcerningasituationinthePost-Officewhichhehadbeenforsometimeexpecting,andtowhichhewasnotyetappointed.Heperfectlyknewthatthepubliccouldneverhavegothimin,buthegrimlygratifiedhimselfwiththeideathatthepublickepthimout.Undertheinfluenceofthisinjury(andperhapsofsomelittlestraitnessandirregularityinthematterofwages),hehadgrownneglectfulofhispersonandmoroseinmind;andnowbeholdinginClennamoneofthedegradedbodyofhisoppressors,receivedhimwithignominy.

           MrsGowan,however,receivedhimwithcondescension.Hefoundheracourtlyoldlady,formerlyaBeauty,andstillsufficientlywell-favouredtohavedispensedwiththepowderonhernoseandacertainimpossiblebloomundereacheye.Shewasalittleloftywithhim;sowasanotheroldlady,dark-browedandhigh-nosed,andwhomusthavehadsomethingrealaboutherorshecouldnothaveexisted,butitwascertainlynotherhairorherteethorherfigureorhercomplexion;sowasagreyoldgentlemanofdignifiedandsullenappearance;bothofwhomhadcometodinner.
