           MrGowanmadeitnoconcernofhiswhetheritwasnobody’sorsomebody’s.Hepreservedhisperfectserenityofmanneronalloccasions,asifthepossibilityofClennam’spresumingtohavedebatedthegreatquestionweretoodistantandridiculoustobeimagined.HehadalwaysanaffabilitytobestowonClennamandaneasetotreathimwith,whichmightofitself(inthesupposititiouscaseofhisnothavingtakenthatsagaciouscourse)havebeenaveryuncomfortableelementinhisstateofmind.
