           Inthisbelief,tobesure,theyhadlongbeencarefullytrainedbytheBarnaclesandStiltstalkings,whowerealwaysproclaimingtothem,officially,thatnocountrywhichfailedtosubmititselftothosetwolargefamiliescouldpossiblyhopetobeundertheprotectionofProvidence;andwho,whentheybelievedit,disparagedtheminprivateasthemostprejudicedpeopleunderthesun.

           This,therefore,mightbecalledapoliticalpositionoftheBleedingHearts;buttheyentertainedotherobjectionstohavingforeignersintheYard.Theybelievedthatforeignerswerealwaysbadlyoff;andthoughtheywereasilloffthemselvesastheycoulddesiretobe,thatdidnotdiminishtheforceoftheobjection.Theybelievedthatforeignersweredragoonedandbayoneted;andthoughtheycertainlygottheirownskullspromptlyfracturediftheyshowedanyill-humour,stillitwaswithabluntinstrument,andthatdidn’tcount.Theybelievedthatforeignerswerealwaysimmoral;andthoughtheyhadanoccasionalassizeathome,andnowandthenadivorcecaseorso,thathadnothingtodowithit.Theybelievedthatforeignershadnoindependentspirit,asneverbeingescortedtothepollindrovesbyLordDecimusTiteBarnacle,withcoloursflyingandthetuneofRuleBritanniaplaying.Nottobetedious,theyhadmanyotherbeliefsofasimilarkind.

           Againsttheseobstacles,thelameforeignerwiththestickhadtomakeheadaswellashecould;notabsolutelysingle-handed,becauseMrArthurClennamhadrecommendedhimtothePlornishes(helivedatthetopofthesamehouse),butstillatheavyodds.
