Throughouttheremainderoftheday,BleedingHeartYardwasinconsternation,asthegrimPanckscruisedinit;haranguingtheinhabitantsontheirbackslidingsinrespectofpayment,demandinghisbond,breathingnoticestoquitandexecutions,runningdowndefaulters,sendingaswellofterroronbeforehim,andleavingitinhiswake.Knotsofpeople,impelledbyafatalattraction,lurkedoutsideanyhouseinwhichhewasknowntobe,listeningforfragmentsofhisdiscoursestotheinmates;and,whenhewasrumouredtobecomingdownthestairs,oftencouldnotdispersesoquicklybutthathewouldbeprematurelyinamongthem,demandingtheirownarrears,androotingthemtothespot.Throughouttheremainderoftheday,MrPancks’sWhatweretheyupto?andWhatdidtheymeanbyit?soundedallovertheYard.MrPanckswouldn’thearofexcuses,wouldn’thearofcomplaints,wouldn’thearofrepairs,wouldn’thearofanythingbutunconditionalmoneydown.Perspiringandpuffinganddartingaboutineccentricdirections,andbecominghotteranddingiereverymoment,helashedthetideoftheyardintoamostagitatedandturbidstate.Ithadnotsettleddownintocalmwateragainfulltwohoursafterhehadbeenseenfumingawayonthehorizonatthetopofthesteps
