ThepresentBarnacle,holdingMrClennam’scardinhishand,hadayouthfulaspect,andthefluffiestlittlewhisker,perhaps,thateverwasseen.Suchadownytipwasonhiscallowchin,thatheseemedhalffledgedlikeayoungbird;andacompassionateobservermighthaveurgedthat,ifhehadnotsingedthecalvesofhislegs,hewouldhavediedofcold.Hehadasuperioreye-glassdanglingroundhisneck,butunfortunatelyhadsuchflatorbitstohiseyesandsuchlimplittleeyelidsthatitwouldn’tstickinwhenheputitup,butkepttumblingoutagainsthiswaistcoatbuttonswithaclickthatdiscomposedhimverymuch.
