           Norwasitrelievedbyanyglimpseofthelittlecreaturewhohadbroughthimthere.Perhapssheglidedoutofherdoorwayandinatthatwhereherfatherlived,whilehisfacewasturnedfromboth;buthesawnothingofher.Itwastooearlyforherbrother;tohaveseenhimonce,wastohaveseenenoughofhimtoknowthathewouldbesluggishtoleavewhateverfrowsybedheoccupiedatnight;so,asArthurClennamwalkedupanddown,waitingforthegatetoopen,hecastaboutinhismindforfutureratherthanforpresentmeansofpursuinghisdiscoveries.

           Atlastthelodge-gateturned,andtheturnkey,standingonthestep,takinganearlycombathishair,wasreadytolethimout.Withajoyfulsenseofreleasehepassedthroughthelodge,andfoundhimselfagaininthelittleoutercourt-yardwherehehadspokentothebrotherlastnight.

           Therewasastringofpeoplealreadystragglingin,whomitwasnotdifficulttoidentifyasthenondescriptmessengers,go-betweens,anderrand-bearersoftheplace.
