           ‘WhathadIbetterdo?’

           ‘WehadbettergetholdofAmyfirstofall,’saidTip,referringanydifficultytoherasamatterofcourse.

           Astheypasseddowntheyard,Arthurlookedupatthewindowoftheroomhehadlatelyleft,wherethelightwasstillburning.‘Yes,sir,’saidTip,followinghisglance.‘That’sthegovernor’s.She’llsitwithhimforanotherhourreadingyesterday’spapertohim,orsomethingofthatsort;andthenshe’llcomeoutlikealittleghost,andvanishawaywithoutasound.’

           Thisbroughtthemtothetavern-establishmentattheupperendoftheprison,wherethecollegianshadjustvacatedtheirsocialeveningclub.Theapartmentontheground-floorinwhichitwasheld,wastheSnuggeryinquestion;thepresidentialtribuneofthechairman,thepewter-pots,glasses,pipes,tobacco-ashes,andgeneralflavourofmembers,werestillasthatconvivialinstitutionhadleftthemonitsadjournment.
