           Floratriedinvaintosoothetheexcellentwomanbyexplainingthattheyweregoinghometodinner.MrF.‘sAuntpersistedinreplying,‘Bringhimfor’ardandI’llchuckhimouto’winder!’Havingreiteratedthisdemandanimmensenumberoftimes,withasustainedglareofdefianceatLittleDorrit,MrF.‘sAuntfoldedherarms,andsatdowninthecornerofthepie-shopparlour;steadfastlyrefusingtobudgeuntilsuchtimeas‘he’shouldhavebeen‘broughtfor’ard,’andthechuckingportionofhisdestinyaccomplished.

           Inthisconditionofthings,FloraconfidedtoLittleDorritthatshehadnotseenMrF.‘sAuntsofulloflifeandcharacterforweeks;thatshewouldfinditnecessarytoremainthere‘hoursperhaps,’untiltheinexorableoldladycouldbesoftened;andthatshecouldmanageherbestalone.Theyparted,therefore,inthefriendliestmanner,andwiththekindestfeelingonbothsides.

           MrF.‘sAuntholdingoutlikeagrimfortress,andFlorabecominginneedofrefreshment,amessengerwasdespatchedtothehotelforthetumbleralreadyglancedat,whichwasafterwardsreplenished.
