           Hemighthavereleasedthelittlelighthandafterferventlykissingitagain;butthat,withaverygentlelingeringwhereitwas,itseemedtocourtbeingretained.Hetookitinbothofhis,anditlaysoftlyonhisbreast.

           ‘DearLittleDorrit,itisnotmyimprisonmentonlythatwillsoonbeover.Thissacrificeofyoumustbeended.Wemustlearntopartagain,andtotakeourdifferentwayssowideasunder.Youhavenotforgottenwhatwesaidtogether,whenyoucameback?’

           ‘Ono,Ihavenotforgottenit.Butsomethinghasbeen—Youfeelquitestrongto-day,don’tyou?’

           ‘Quitestrong.’

           Thehandheheldcreptupalittlenearerhisface.

           ‘DoyoufeelquitestrongenoughtoknowwhatagreatfortuneIhavegot?’

           ‘Ishallbeverygladtobetold.NofortunecanbetoogreatorgoodforLittleDorrit.’

           ‘Ihavebeenanxiouslywaitingtotellyou.Ihavebeenlongingandlongingtotellyou.Youaresureyouwillnottakeit?’

           ‘Never!’

           ‘Youarequitesureyouwillnottakehalfofit?’

           ‘Never,dearLittleDorrit!’

           Asshelookedathimsilently,therewassomethinginheraffectionatefacethathedidnotquitecomprehend:somethingthatcouldhavebrokenintotearsinamoment,andyetthatwashappyandproud.

           ‘YouwillbesorrytohearwhatIhavetotellyouaboutFanny.PoorFannyhaslosteverything.Shehasnothingleftbutherhusband’sincome.
