Thesixthdayoftheappointedweekwasamoist,hot,mistyday.Itseemedasthoughtheprison’spoverty,andshabbiness,anddirt,weregrowinginthesultryatmosphere.Withanachingheadandawearyheart,Clennamhadwatchedthemiserablenightout,listeningtothefallofrainontheyardpavement,thinkingofitssofterfalluponthecountryearth.Ablurredcircleofyellowhazehadrisenupintheskyinlieuofsun,andhehadwatchedthepatchitputuponhiswall,likeabitoftheprison’sraggedness.Hehadheardthegatesopen;andthebadlyshodfeetthatwaitedoutsideshufflein;andthesweeping,andpumping,andmovingabout,begin,whichcommencedtheprisonmorning.
