           Shewasworseathomethanshehadbeenatschool.Shehadacrowdofcousinsandacquaintances,andwehaddancesatherhouse,andwentouttodancesatotherhouses,and,bothathomeandout,shetormentedmylovebeyondendurance.Herplanwas,tomakethemallfondofher—andsodrivemewildwithjealousy.Tobefamiliarandendearingwiththemall—andsomakememadwithenvyingthem.Whenwewereleftaloneinourbedroomatnight,Iwouldreproachherwithmyperfectknowledgeofherbaseness;andthenshewouldcryandcryandsayIwascruel,andthenIwouldholdherinmyarmstillmorning:lovingherasmuchasever,andoftenfeelingasif,ratherthansufferso,Icouldsoholdherinmyarmsandplungetothebottomofariver—whereIwouldstillholdherafterwewerebothdead.

           Itcametoanend,andIwasrelieved.Inthefamilytherewasanauntwhowasnotfondofme.Idoubtifanyofthefamilylikedmemuch;butIneverwantedthemtolikeme,beingaltogetherboundupintheonegirl.
