           Thelatter’sgenialnatureanddressyappearancepleasedhim.HeknewthatDrouetwasonlyatravellingsalesman—andnotoneofmanyyearsatthat—butthefirmofBartlett,Caryoe&Companywasalargeandprosperoushouse,andDrouetstoodwell.HurstwoodknewCaryoequitewell,havingdrunkaglassnowandthenwithhim,incompanywithseveralothers,whentheconversationwasgeneral.Drouethadwhatwasahelpinhisbusiness,amoderatesenseofhumour,andcouldtellagoodstorywhentheoccasionrequired.HecouldtalkraceswithHurstwood,tellinterestingincidentsconcerninghimselfandhisexperienceswithwomen,andreportthestateoftradeinthecitieswhichhevisited,andsomanagedtomakehimselfalmostinvariablyagreeable.To-nighthewasparticularlyso,sincehisreporttothecompanyhadbeenfavourablycommentedupon,hisnewsampleshadbeensatisfactorilyselected,andhistripmarkedoutforthenextsixweeks.

           “Why,hello,Charlie,oldman,”saidHurstwood,asDrouetcameinthateveningabouteighto’clock.“Howgoesit?”Theroomwascrowded.

           Drouetshookhands,beaminggoodnature,andtheystrolledtowardsthebar.

           “Oh,allright.”

           “Ihaven’tseenyouinsixweeks.Whendidyougetin?”

           “Friday,”saidDrouet.“Hadafinetrip.”

           “Gladofit,”saidHurstwood,hisblackeyeslitwithawarmthwhichhalfdisplacedthecoldmake-believethatusuallydweltinthem.“Whatareyougoingtotake?”headded,asthebarkeeper,insnowyjacketandtie,leanedtowardthemfrombehindthebar.

           “OldPepper,”saidDrouet.
