Amongtheforceswhichsweepandplaythroughouttheuniverse,untutoredmanisbutawispinthewind.Ourcivilisationisstillinamiddlestage,scarcelybeast,inthatitisnolongerwhollyguidedbyinstinct;scarcelyhuman,inthatitisnotyetwhollyguidedbyreason.Onthetigernoresponsibilityrests.Weseehimalignedbynaturewiththeforcesoflife—heisbornintotheirkeepingandwithoutthoughtheisprotected.Weseemanfarremovedfromthelairsofthejungles,hisinnateinstinctsdulledbytoonearanapproachtofree-will,hisfree-willnotsufficientlydevelopedtoreplacehisinstinctsandaffordhimperfectguidance.
Heisbecomingtoowisetohearkenalwaystoinstinctsanddesires;heisstilltooweaktoalwaysprevailagainstthem.Asabeast,theforcesoflifealignedhimwiththem;asaman,hehasnotyetwhollylearnedtoalignhimselfwiththeforces.Inthisintermediatestagehewavers—neitherdrawninharmonywithnaturebyhisinstinctsnoryetwiselyputtinghimselfintoharmonybyhisownfree-will.Heisevenasawispinthewind,movedbyeverybreathofpassion,actingnowbyhiswillandnowbyhisinstincts,erringwithone,onlytoretrievebytheother,fallingbyone,onlytorisebytheother—acreatureofincalculablevariability.Wehavetheconsolationofknowingthatevolutioniseverinaction,thattheidealisalightthatcannotfail.Hewillnotforeverbalancethusbetweengoodandevil.
