           Drouetdidnotcallthatevening.Afterreceivingtheletter,hehadlaidasideallthoughtofCarrieforthetimebeingandwasfloatingaroundhavingwhatheconsideredagaytime.Onthisparticulareveninghedinedat“Rector’s,”arestaurantofsomelocalfame,whichoccupiedabasementatClarkandMonroeStreets.There—afterhevisitedtheresortofFitzgeraldandMoy’sinAdamsStreet,oppositetheimposingFederalBuilding.Thereheleanedoverthesplendidbarandswallowedaglassofplainwhiskeyandpurchasedacoupleofcigars,oneofwhichhelighted.Thistohimrepresentedinparthighlife—afairsampleofwhatthewholemustbe.Drouetwasnotadrinkerinexcess.Hewasnotamoneyedman.Heonlycravedthebest,ashismindconceivedit,andsuchdoingsseemedtohimapartofthebest.Rector’s,withitspolishedmarblewallsandfloor,itsprofusionoflights,itsshowofchinaandsilverware,and,aboveall,itsreputationasaresortforactorsandprofessionalmen,seemedtohimtheproperplaceforasuccessfulmantogo.Helovedfineclothes,goodeating,andparticularlythecompanyandacquaintanceshipofsuccessfulmen.Whendining,itwasasourceofkeensatisfactiontohimtoknowthatJosephJeffersonwaswonttocometothissameplace,orthatHenryE.Dixie,awell-knownperformeroftheday,wasthenonlyafewtablesoff.AtRector’shecouldalwaysobtainthissatisfaction,forthereonecouldencounterpoliticians,brokers,actors,somerichyoung“rounders”ofthetown,alleatinganddrinkingamidabuzzofpopularcommonplaceconversation.
