           Therewasanairaboutherwhichshowedplainerthananywordsthatshewasbothwearyanddisappointed.

           “Whatsortofworkisit?”heasked,lingeringamomentasheturneduponhisheeltogointothebathroom.

           “Runningamachine,”answeredCarrie.

           Itwasveryevidentthatitdidnotconcernhimmuch,savefromthesideoftheflat’ssuccess.HewasirritatedashadebecauseitcouldnothavecomeaboutinthethrowoffortuneforCarrietobepleased.

           MinnieworkedwithlesselationthanshehadjustbeforeCarriearrived.ThesizzleofthemeatfryingdidnotsoundquitesopleasingnowthatCarriehadreportedherdiscontent.ToCarrie,theonereliefofthewholedaywouldhavebeenajollyhome,asympatheticreception,abrightsuppertable,andsomeonetosay:“Oh,well,standitalittlewhile.Youwillgetsomethingbetter,”butnowthiswasashes.Shebegantoseethattheylookeduponhercomplaintasunwarranted,andthatshewassupposedtoworkonandsaynothing.
