           The,toCarrie,veryimportanttheatricalperformancewastotakeplaceattheAveryonconditionswhichweretomakeitmorenoteworthythanwasatfirstanticipated.ThelittledramaticstudenthadwrittentoHurstwoodtheverymorningherpartwasbroughtherthatshewasgoingtotakepartinaplay.

           “Ireallyam,”shewrote,feelingthathemighttakeitasajest;“Ihavemypartnow,honest,truly.”

           Hurstwoodsmiledinanindulgentwayashereadthis.

           “Iwonderwhatitisgoingtobe?Imustseethat.”

           Heansweredatonce,makingapleasantreferencetoherability.“Ihaven’ttheslightestdoubtyouwillmakeasuccess.Youmustcometotheparkto-morrowmorningandtellmeallaboutit.”

           Carriegladlycomplied,andrevealedallthedetailsoftheundertakingassheunderstoodit.

           “Well,”hesaid,“that’sfine.I’mgladtohearit.Ofcourse,youwilldowell,you’resoclever.”

           Hehadtrulyneverseensomuchspiritinthegirlbefore.Hertendencytodiscoveratouchofsadnesshadforthenoncedisappeared.Asshespokehereyeswerebright,hercheeksred.Sheradiatedmuchofthepleasurewhichherundertakingsgaveher.Forallhermisgivings—andtheywereasplentifulasthemomentsoftheday—shewasstillhappy.Shecouldnotrepressherdelightindoingthislittlethingwhich,toanordinaryobserver,hadnoimportanceatall.

           Hurstwoodwascharmedbythedevelopmentofthefactthatthegirlhadcapabilities.Thereisnothingsoinspiringinlifeasthesightofalegitimateambition,nomatterhowincipient.Itgivescolour,force,andbeautytothepossessor.
