           Hetightenedhisfingersashesawthesmileshegavehim.

           Carrielaughedecstatically.

           Hewasdwellingonherattractivenessashehadfeltittheeveningbefore,andminglingitwiththefeelingherpresenceinspirednow.

           Carriewasdwellingintheatmospherewhichthismancreatedforher.Alreadyshewasenlivenedandsuffusedwithaglow.Shefelthisdrawingtowardherineverysoundofhisvoice.

           “Thoseweresuchniceflowersyousentme,”shesaid,afteramomentortwo.“Theywerebeautiful.”

           “Gladyoulikedthem,”heanswered,simply.

           Hewasthinkingallthetimethatthesubjectofhisdesirewasbeingdelayed.Hewasanxioustoturnthetalktohisownfeelings.Allwasripeforit.HisCarriewasbesidehim.Hewantedtoplungeinandexpostulatewithher,andyethefoundhimselffishingforwordsandfeelingforaway.
