Chapter XIX. An Hour In Elfland: A Clamour Half Heard

           

           Atlastthecurtainwasreadytogoup.Allthedetailsofthemake-uphadbeencompleted,andthecompanysettleddownastheleaderofthesmall,hiredorchestratappedsignificantlyuponhismusicrackwithhisbatonandbeganthesoftcurtain-raisingstrain.Hurstwoodceasedtalking,andwentwithDrouetandhisfriendSagarMorrisonaroundtothebox.

           “Now,we’llseehowthelittlegirldoes,”hesaidtoDrouet,inatonewhichnooneelsecouldhear.

           Onthestage,sixofthecharactershadalreadyappearedintheopeningparlourscene.DrouetandHurstwoodsawataglancethatCarriewasnotamongthem,andwentontalkinginawhisper.Mrs.Morgan,Mrs.Hoagland,andtheactorwhohadtakenBamberger’spartwererepresentingtheprincipalrôlesinthisscene.Theprofessional,whosenamewasPatton,hadlittletorecommendhimoutsideofhisassurance,butthisatthepresentmomentwasmostpalpablyneeded.Mrs.Morgan,asPearl,wasstiffwithfright.Mrs.Hoaglandwashuskyinthethroat.Thewholecompanywassoweak-kneedthatthelinesweremerelyspoken,andnothingmore.Ittookallthehopeanduncriticalgood-natureoftheaudiencetokeepfrommanifestingpitybythatunrestwhichistheagonyoffailure.

           Hurstwoodwasperfectlyindifferent.Hetookitforgrantedthatitwouldbeworthless.Allhecaredforwastohaveitendurableenoughtoallowforpretensionandcongratulationafterward.

           Afterthefirstrushoffright,however,theplayersgotoverthedangerofcollapse.
