           Theyrambledweaklyforward,losingnearlyalltheexpressionwhichwasintended,andmakingthethingdullintheextreme,whenCarriecamein.

           Oneglanceather,andbothHurstwoodandDrouetsawplainlythatshealsowasweak-kneed.Shecamefaintlyacrossthestage,saying:

           “Andyou,sir;wehavebeenlookingforyousinceeighto’clock,”butwithsolittlecolourandinsuchafeeblevoicethatitwaspositivelypainful.

           “She’sfrightened,”whisperedDrouettoHurstwood.

           Themanagermadenoanswer.

           Shehadalinepresentlywhichwassupposedtobefunny.

           “Well,that’sasmuchastosaythatI’masortoflifepill.”

           Itcameoutsoflat,however,thatitwasadeathlything.Drouetfidgeted.Hurstwoodmovedhistoetheleastbit.

           TherewasanotherplaceinwhichLaurawastoriseand,withasenseofimpendingdisaster,say,sadly:

           “Iwishyouhadn’tsaidthat,Pearl.Youknowtheoldproverb,‘Callamaidbyamarriedname.’”

           Thelackoffeelinginthethingwasridiculous.Carriedidnotgetitatall.Sheseemedtobetalkinginhersleep.Itlookedasifshewerecertaintobeawretchedfailure.ShewasmorehopelessthanMrs.Morgan,whohadrecoveredsomewhat,andwasnowsayingherlinesclearlyatleast.Drouetlookedawayfromthestageattheaudience.Thelatterheldoutsilently,hopingforageneralchange,ofcourse.HurstwoodfixedhiseyeonCarrie,asiftohypnotiseherintodoingbetter.Hewaspouringdeterminationofhisowninherdirection.Hefeltsorryforher.

           Inafewmoreminutesitfelltohertoreadthelettersentinbythestrangevillain.
