           TheaudiencehadbeenslightlydivertedbyaconversationbetweentheprofessionalactorandacharactercalledSnorky,impersonatedbyashortlittleAmerican,whoreallydevelopedsomehumourasahalf-crazed,one-armedsoldier,turnedmessengerforaliving.Hebawledhislinesoutwithsuchdefiancethat,whiletheyreallydidnotpartakeofthehumourintended,theywerefunny.Nowhewasoff,however,anditwasbacktopathos,withCarrieasthechieffigure.Shedidnotrecover.Shewanderedthroughthewholescenebetweenherselfandtheintrudingvillain,strainingthepatienceoftheaudience,andfinallyexiting,muchtotheirrelief.

           “She’stoonervous,”saidDrouet,feelinginthemildnessoftheremarkthathewaslyingforonce.

           “Bettergobackandsayawordtoher.”

           Drouetwasgladtodoanythingforrelief.Hefairlyhustledaroundtothesideentrance,andwasletinbythefriendlydoor-keeper.Carriewasstandinginthewings,weaklywaitinghernextcue,allthesnapandnervegoneoutofher.

           “Say,Cad,”hesaid,lookingather,“youmustn’tbenervous.Wakeup.Thoseguysouttheredon’tamounttoanything.Whatareyouafraidof?”

           “Idon’tknow,”saidCarrie.“Ijustdon’tseemtobeabletodoit.”

           Shewasgratefulforthedrummer’spresence,though.Shehadfoundthecompanysonervousthatherownstrengthhadgone.

           “Comeon,”saidDrouet.“Braceup.Whatareyouafraidof?Goonouttherenow,anddothetrick.Whatdoyoucare?”

           Carrierevivedalittleunderthedrummer’selectrical,nervouscondition.

           “DidIdosoverybad?”

           “Notabit.
