           “What?”saidHanson.

           “SisterCarriehasgonetolivesomewhereelse.”

           Hansonjumpedoutofbedwithmoreceleritythanheusuallydisplayedandlookedatthenote.Theonlyindicationofhisthoughtscameintheformofalittleclickingsoundmadebyhistongue;thesoundsomepeoplemakewhentheywishtourgeonahorse.

           “Wheredoyousupposeshe’sgoneto?”saidMinnie,thoroughlyaroused.

           “Idon’tknow,”atouchofcynicismlightinghiseye.“Nowshehasgoneanddoneit.”

           Minniemovedherheadinapuzzledway.

           “Oh,oh,”shesaid,“shedoesn’tknowwhatshehasdone.”

           “Well,”saidHanson,afterawhile,stickinghishandsoutbeforehim,“whatcanyoudo?”

           Minnie’swomanlynaturewashigherthanthis.Shefiguredthepossibilitiesinsuchcases.

           “Oh,”shesaidatlast,“poorSisterCarrie!”
