           “Yes,IsawGeorge,”returnedDrouet.“Greatoldboy,isn’the?Wehadquiteatimetheretogether.”

           Thebarkeeperwassettingouttheglassesandbottlebeforethem,andtheynowpouredoutthedraughtastheytalked,Drouetfillinghistowithinathirdoffull,aswasconsideredproper,andHurstwoodtakingthebarestsuggestionofwhiskeyandmodifyingitwithseltzer.

           “What’sbecomeofCaryoe?”remarkedHurstwood.“Ihaven’tseenhimaroundhereintwoweeks.”

           “Laidup,theysay,”exclaimedDrouet.“Say,he’sagoutyoldboy!”

           “Madealotofmoneyinhistime,though,hasn’the?”

           “Yes,wadsofit,”returnedDrouet.“Hewon’tlivemuchlonger.Barelycomesdowntotheofficenow.”

           “Justoneboy,hasn’the?”askedHurstwood.

           “Yes,andaswift-pacer,”laughedDrouet.

           “Iguesshecan’thurtthebusinessverymuch,though,withtheothermembersallthere.”

           “No,hecan’tinjurethatany,Iguess.”

           Hurstwoodwasstanding,hiscoatopen,histhumbsinhispockets,thelightonhisjewelsandringsrelievingthemwithagreeabledistinctness.Hewasthepictureoffastidiouscomfort.

           Toonenotinclinedtodrink,andgiftedwithamoreseriousturnofmind,suchabubbling,chattering,glitteringchambermusteverseemananomaly,astrangecommentaryonnatureandlife.
