           Heknewbyname,andcouldgreetpersonallywitha“Well,oldfellow,”hundredsofactors,merchants,politicians,andthegeneralrunofsuccessfulcharactersabouttown,anditwaspartofhissuccesstodoso.Hehadafinelygraduatedscaleofinformalityandfriendship,whichimprovedfromthe“Howdoyoudo?”addressedtothefifteen-dollar-a-weekclerksandofficeattaches,who,bylongfrequentingoftheplace,becameawareofhisposition,tothe“Why,oldman,howareyou?”whichheaddressedtothosenotedorrichindividualswhoknewhimandwereinclinedtobefriendly.Therewasaclass,however,toorich,toofamous,ortoosuccessful,withwhomhecouldnotattemptanyfamiliarityofaddress,andwiththesehewasprofessionallytactful,assumingagraveanddignifiedattitude,payingthemthedeferencewhichwouldwintheirgoodfeelingwithoutintheleastcompromisinghisownbearingandopinions.Therewere,inthelastplace,afewgoodfollowers,neitherrichnorpoor,famous,noryetremarkablysuccessful,withwhomhewasfriendlyonthescoreofgood-fellowship.Thesewerethekindofmenwithwhomhewouldconverselongestandmostseriously.Helovedtogooutandhaveagoodtimeonceinawhile—togototheraces,thetheatres,thesportingentertainmentsatsomeoftheclubs.Hekeptahorseandneattrap,hadhiswifeandtwochildren,whowerewellestablishedinaneathouseontheNorthSidenearLincolnPark,andwasaltogetheraveryacceptableindividualofourgreatAmericanupperclass—thefirstgradebelowtheluxuriouslyrich.
