           Nothingcameofthisincidentatthetime,forthetruthisitdidnotseemconclusiveenoughtowarrantanydiscussion.Onlytheatmosphereofdistrustandill-feelingwasstrengthened,precipitatingeverynowandthenlittlesprinklingsofirritableconversation,enlivenedbyflashesofwrath.ThematteroftheWaukeshaoutingwasmerelyacontinuationofotherthingsofthesamenature.

           ThedayafterCarrie’sappearanceontheAverystage,Mrs.HurstwoodvisitedtheraceswithJessicaandayouthofheracquaintance,Mr.BartTaylor,thesonoftheownerofalocalhouse-furnishingestablishment.Theyhaddrivenoutearly,and,asitchanced,encounteredseveralfriendsofHurstwood,allElks,andtwoofwhomhadattendedtheperformancetheeveningbefore.
