           “Wasitintheafternoon?”sheasked,artfully,assuminganairofacquaintanceshipwiththematter.

           “Yes,abouttwoorthree.”

           “ItmusthavebeenJessica,”saidMrs.Hurstwood,notwishingtoseemtoattachanyimportancetotheincident.

           Thephysicianhadathoughtortwoofhisown,butdismissedthematterasworthyofnofurtherdiscussiononhispartatleast.

           Mrs.Hurstwoodgavethisbitofinformationconsiderablethoughtduringthenextfewhours,andevendays.Shetookitforgrantedthatthedoctorhadreallyseenherhusband,andthathehadbeenriding,mostlikely,withsomeotherwoman,afterannouncinghimselfasbusytoher.Asaconsequence,sherecalled,withrisingfeeling,howoftenhehadrefusedtogotoplaceswithher,toshareinlittlevisits,or,indeed,takepartinanyofthesocialamenitieswhichfurnishedthediversionofherexistence.HehadbeenseenatthetheatrewithpeoplewhomhecalledMoy’sfriends;nowhewasseendriving,and,mostlikely,wouldhaveanexcuseforthat.
