           Thengatheringwhatwasmeant,heturnedtowardthecar,puttinghispolicewhistletohismouthashedidso.ButSparser,havingbythistimeheardthecriesandseenthepolicemanleaving,dashedswiftlypasthimintoSeventeenthStreet,alongwhichhespedatalmostfortymilesanhour,grazingthehubofatruckinoneinstance,scrapingthefenderofanautomobileinanother,andmissingbyinchesandquarterinchesvehiclesorpedestrians,whilethosebehindhiminthecarwereforthemostpartsittingboltuprightandtense,theireyeswide,theirhandsclenched,theirfacesandlipssetor,asinthecaseofHortenseandLucilleNickolasandTinaKogel,givingvoicetorepeated,"Oh,Gods!""Oh,what’sgoingtohappennow?"

           Butthepoliceandthosewhohadstartedtopursuewerenottobeoutdonesoquickly.Unabletomakeoutthelicenseplatenumberandseeingfromthefirstmotionsofthecarthatithadnointentionofstopping,theofficerblewaloudandlongblastonhispolicewhistle.
