           Justashenearedthecornerandwasabouttoturnathighspeed,swinginginclosetothecurbtodoso,alittlegirlofaboutnine,whowasrunningtowardthecrossing,jumpeddirectlyinfrontofthemovingmachine.Andbecausetherewasnoopportunitygivenhimtoturnandavoidher,shewasstruckanddraggedanumberoffeetbeforethemachinecouldbehalted.Atthesametime,therearosepiercingscreamsfromatleasthalfadozenwomen,andshoutsfromasmanymenwhohadwitnessedtheaccident.

           And,withoutconsultingtheothers,whowerestillhalfstanding,butalmostspeechlesswithfear,heshottheleverintofirst,secondandthenhigh,andgivingtheengineallthegasitwouldendure,spedwithittothenextcornerbeyond.
