The"deathhouse"inthisparticularprisonwasoneofthosecrasserectionsandmaintenancesofhumaninsensitivenessandstupidityprincipallyforwhichnooneprimarilywasreallyresponsible.Indeed,itstotalplanandprocedureweretheresultsofaseriesofprimarylegislativeenactments,followedbydecisionsandcompulsionsasdevisedbythetemperamentsandseemingnecessitiesofvariouswardens,untilatlast—bydegreesandwithoutanythingworthyofthenameofthinkingonanyone’spart—therehadbeengatheredandwasnowbeingenforcedallthatcouldpossiblybeimaginedinthewayofunnecessaryandreallyunauthorizedcrueltyorstupidanddestructivetorture.Andtotheendthataman,oncecondemnedbyajury,wouldbecompelledtosuffernotalonethedeathforwhichhissentencecalled,butathousandothersbeforethat.Fortheveryroombyitsarrangement,aswellastherulesgoverningthelivesandactionsoftheinmates,wassufficienttobringaboutthistorture,willy-nilly.
Itwasaroomthirtybyfiftyfeet,ofstoneandconcreteandsteel,andsurmountedsomethirtyfeetfromthefloorbyaskylight.Presumablyanimprovementoveranolderandworsedeathhouse,withwhichitwasstillconnectedbyadoor,itwasdividedlengthwisebyabroadpassage,alongwhich,onthegroundfloor,weretwelvecells,sixonasideandeightbyteneachandfacingeachother.Andaboveagainasecondtierofwhatwereknownasbalconycells—fiveonaside.
