           Theresultofallthis,however,wasthatitwasfinallydecidedthatperhapstheeasiestandsafestdefensethatcouldbemade,assumingthattheGriffithsfamilyofLycurguswouldsubmittoit,wouldbethatofinsanityor"brainstorm"—atemporaryaberrationduetoloveandanillusionofgrandeurarousedinClydebySondraFinchleyandthethreateneddisruptionbyRobertaofallhisdreamsandplans.ButafterconsultationwithCatchumanandDarrahBrookhartatLycurgus,andtheseinturnconferringwithSamuelandGilbertGriffiths,itwasdeterminedthatthiswouldnotdo.Fortoestablishinsanityor"brainstorm"wouldrequirepreviousevidenceortestimonytotheeffectthatClydewasofnonetoosoundmind,erratichiswholelifelong,andwithcertainspecificinstancestendingtodemonstratehowreallypeculiarhewasrelatives(amongthemtheGriffithsofLycurgusthemselves,perhaps),comingontosweartoitalineofevidence,which,requiringasitwould,outrightlyingandperjuryonthepartofmanyaswellasreflectingontheGriffiths’bloodandbrain,wassufficienttoalienatebothSamuelandGilberttotheextentthattheywouldhavenoneofit.AndsoBrookhartwascompelledtoassureBelknapthatthislineofdefensewouldhavetobeabandoned.

           Suchbeingthecase,bothBelknapandJephsonwereoncemorecompelledtositdownandconsider.Foranyotherdefensewhicheithercouldthinkofnowseemedpositivelyhopeless.
