TheheadoftheLycurgusbranchoftheGriffiths,ascontrastedwiththefatheroftheKansasCityfamily,wasmostarresting.UnlikehisshorterandmoreconfusedbrotheroftheDoorofHope,whomhehadnotevenseenforthirtyyears,hewasalittleabovetheaverageinheight,verywell-knit,althoughcomparativelyslender,shrewdofeye,andincisivebothastomannerandspeech.Longusedtocontendingforhimself,andhavingcomebyeffortaswellasresultstoknowthathewasabovetheaverageinacumenandcommercialability,hewasinclinedattimestobeabitintolerantofthosewhowerenot.Hewasnotungenerousorunpleasantinmanner,butalwaysstrivingtomaintainacalmandjudicialair.Andhetoldhimselfbywayofexcuseforhismannerismsthathewasmerelyacceptinghimselfatthevaluethatothersplaceduponhimandallthosewho,likehimself,weresuccessful.
HavingarrivedinLycurgusabouttwenty-fiveyearsbeforewithsomecapitalandadeterminationtoinvestinanewcollarenterprisewhichhadbeenproposedtohim,hehadsucceededthereafterbeyondhiswildestexpectations.Andnaturallyhewasvainaboutit.Hisfamilyatthistime—twenty-fiveyearslater—unquestionablyoccupiedoneofthebest,aswellasthemosttastefullyconstructedresidencesinLycurgus.Theywerealsoesteemedasamongthefewbestfamiliesofthisregion—being,ifnottheoldest,atleastamongthemostconservative,respectableandsuccessfulinLycurgus.
