           TwoincidentswhichoccurredatthistimetendedstillmoretosharpenthecontrarypointsofviewholdingbetweenClydeandRoberta.OneofthesewasnomorethanaglimpsewhichRobertahadoneeveningofClydepausingattheCentralAvenuecurbinfrontofthepost-officetosayafewwordstoArabellaStark,whoinalargeandimpressive-lookingcar,waswaitingforherfatherwhowasstillintheStarkBuildingopposite.AndMissStark,fashionablyoutfittedaccordingtotheseason,herworldandherownpretentioustaste,wasaffectedlyposedatthewheel,notonlyforthebenefitofClydebutthepublicingeneral.AndtoRoberta,whobynowwasreducedtothevergeofdistractionbetweenClyde’sdelayandherdeterminationtocompelhimtoactinherbehalf,sheappearedtobelittlelessthananepitomeofallthesecurity,luxuryandfreedomfromresponsibilitywhichsoenticedandhencecausedClydetodelayandbeasindifferentaspossibletothedirestatewhichconfrontedher.For,alas,apartfromthisclaimofhercondition,whathadshetoofferhimcomparabletoallhewouldbegivingupincaseheaccededtoherrequest?Nothingathoughtwhichwasfarfromencouraging.

           Yet,atthismomentcontrastingherownwretchedandneglectedstatewiththatofthisMissStark,forexample,shefoundherselfapreytoanevenmorecomplainingandantagonisticmoodthanhadhithertocharacterizedher.Itwasnotright.Itwasnotfair.
