           ThescenewastheexecutivechamberofthenewlyelectedGovernoroftheStateofNewYorksomethreeweeksafterthenewsconveyedtoClydebyMcMillan.AftermanypreliminaryandfutileeffortsonthepartofBelknapandJephsontoobtainacommutationofthesentenceofClydefromdeathtolifeimprisonment(thecustomaryfilingofapleaforclemency,togetherwithsuchcommentsastheyhadtomakeinregardtothewaytheevidencehadbeenmisinterpretedandtheillegalityofintroducingthelettersofRobertaintheiroriginalform,toallofwhichGovernorWaltham,anex-districtattorneyandjudgefromthesouthernpartofthestate,hadbeenconscientiouslycompelledtoreplythathecouldseenoreasonforinterfering)therewasnowbeforeGovernorWalthamMrs.GriffithstogetherwiththeReverendMcMillan.For,movedbythewidespreadinterestinthefinaldispositionofClyde’scase,aswellasthefactthathismother,becauseofherunshakendevotiontohim,andhavinglearnedofthedecisionoftheCourtofAppeals,hadoncemorereturnedtoAuburnandsincethenhadbeenappealingtothenewspapers,aswellastohimselfthroughlettersforacorrectunderstandingoftheextenuatingcircumstancessurroundingherson’sdownfall,andbecausesheherselfhadrepeatedlyappealedtohimforapersonalinterviewinwhichsheshouldbeallowedtopresentherdeepestconvictionsinregardtoallthis,theGovernorhadatlastconsentedtoseeher.Itcoulddonoharm.Besidesitwouldtendtosootheher.
