Therewerephasesofthisthing,thetanglesanddoubtsinvolvedinthatdark,savageplotofhis,ashenowsawandbroodedonit,whichwerenotsoeasilytobedisposedof.Perhapsthetwoworstwere,first,thatinbringingRobertatheretothatpointonthatlake—thatlonespot—andthengrowingsoweakandfuriouswithhimselfbecauseofhisownincapacitytodoevil,hehadfrightenedherintorisingandtryingtocometohim.Andthatinthefirstinstancemadeitpossibleforhertobethusaccidentallystruckbyhimandsomadehim,inpartatleast,guiltyofthatblow—ordidit?—amurderous,sinfulblowinthatsense.Maybe.WhatwouldtheRev.McMillansaytothat?Andsincebecauseofthatshehadfallenintothewater,washenotguiltyofherfalling?Itwasathoughtthattroubledhimverymuchnow—hisconstructiveshareofguiltinallthat.RegardlessofwhatOberwaltzerhadsaidthereatthetrialinregardtohisswimmingawayfromher—thatifshehadaccidentallyfalleninthewater,itwasnocrimeonhispart,supposingherefusedtorescueher—still,ashenowsawit,andespeciallywhentakeninconnectionwithallthathehadthoughtinregardtoRobertauptothatmoment,itwasacrimejustthesame,wasitnot?Wouldn’tGod—McMillan—thinkso?Andunquestionably,asMasonhadsoshrewdlypointedoutatthetrial,hemighthavesavedher.Andwouldhavetoo,nodoubt,ifshehadbeenSondra—oreventheRobertaofthesummerbefore.
