           Theoldcoachman,whohadbeenwaitingaboutwithhisownhorse,nowjoiningthem,Fannywasliftedonhers,andtheysetoffacrossanotherpartofthepark;herfeelingsofdiscomfortnotlightenedbyseeing,asshelookedback,thattheotherswerewalkingdownthehilltogethertothevillage;nordidherattendantdohermuchgoodbyhiscommentsonMissCrawford’sgreatclevernessasahorse-woman,whichhehadbeenwatchingwithaninterestalmostequaltoherown.

           “Itisapleasuretoseealadywithsuchagoodheartforriding!”saidhe.“Ineverseeonesitahorsebetter.Shedidnotseemtohaveathoughtoffear.Verydifferentfromyou,miss,whenyoufirstbegan,sixyearsagocomenextEaster.Lordblessyou!howyoudidtremblewhenSirThomasfirsthadyouputon!”

           Inthedrawing-roomMissCrawfordwasalsocelebrated.HermeritinbeinggiftedbyNaturewithstrengthandcouragewasfullyappreciatedbytheMissBertrams;herdelightinridingwasliketheirown;herearlyexcellenceinitwasliketheirown,andtheyhadgreatpleasureinpraisingit.

           “Iwassureshewouldridewell,”saidJulia;“shehasthemakeforit.Herfigureisasneatasherbrother’s.”

           “Yes,”addedMaria,“andherspiritsareasgood,andshehasthesameenergyofcharacter.Icannotbutthinkthatgoodhorsemanshiphasagreatdealtodowiththemind.”

           WhentheypartedatnightEdmundaskedFannywhethershemeanttoridethenextday.

           “No,Idonotknow—notifyouwantthemare,”washeranswer.
