           Thatpunishment,thepublicpunishmentofdisgrace,shouldinajustmeasureattendhisshareoftheoffenceis,weknow,notoneofthebarrierswhichsocietygivestovirtue.Inthisworldthepenaltyislessequalthancouldbewished;butwithoutpresumingtolookforwardtoajusterappointmenthereafter,wemayfairlyconsideramanofsense,likeHenryCrawford,tobeprovidingforhimselfnosmallportionofvexationandregret:vexationthatmustrisesometimestoself-reproach,andregrettowretchedness,inhavingsorequitedhospitality,soinjuredfamilypeace,soforfeitedhisbest,mostestimable,andendearedacquaintance,andsolostthewomanwhomhehadrationallyaswellaspassionatelyloved.
