           Thehappinessshewasimparting,too,happinessverylittlealloyedbytheblackcommunicationwhichmustbrieflyprecedeit—thejoyfulconsentofherfatherandmothertoSusan’sgoingwithher—thegeneralsatisfactionwithwhichthegoingofbothseemedregarded,andtheecstasyofSusanherself,wasallservingtosupportherspirits.

           TheafflictionoftheBertramswaslittlefeltinthefamily.Mrs.Pricetalkedofherpoorsisterforafewminutes,buthowtofindanythingtoholdSusan’sclothes,becauseRebeccatookawayalltheboxesandspoiltthem,wasmuchmoreinherthoughts:andasforSusan,nowunexpectedlygratifiedinthefirstwishofherheart,andknowingnothingpersonallyofthosewhohadsinned,orofthosewhoweresorrowing—ifshecouldhelprejoicingfrombeginningtoend,itwasasmuchasoughttobeexpectedfromhumanvirtueatfourteen.

           AsnothingwasreallyleftforthedecisionofMrs.Price,orthegoodofficesofRebecca,everythingwasrationallyanddulyaccomplished,andthegirlswerereadyforthemorrow.Theadvantageofmuchsleeptopreparethemfortheirjourneywasimpossible.Thecousinwhowastravellingtowardsthemcouldhardlyhavelessthanvisitedtheiragitatedspirits—oneallhappiness,theotherallvaryingandindescribableperturbation.

           ByeightinthemorningEdmundwasinthehouse.Thegirlsheardhisentrancefromabove,andFannywentdown.Theideaofimmediatelyseeinghim,withtheknowledgeofwhathemustbesuffering,broughtbackallherownfirstfeelings.Hesonearher,andinmisery.Shewasreadytosinkassheenteredtheparlour.
