           Itwasimpossibletobanishtheletterfromherthoughts,andshecouldnotrelieveherselfbyspeakingofittoanyhumanbeing.MissCrawfordneednothaveurgedsecrecywithsomuchwarmth;shemighthavetrustedtohersenseofwhatwasduetohercousin.

           Thenextdaycameandbroughtnosecondletter.Fannywasdisappointed.Shecouldstillthinkoflittleelseallthemorning;but,whenherfathercamebackintheafternoonwiththedailynewspaperasusual,shewassofarfromexpectinganyelucidationthroughsuchachannelthatthesubjectwasforamomentoutofherhead.

           Shewasdeepinothermusing.Theremembranceofherfirsteveninginthatroom,ofherfatherandhisnewspaper,cameacrossher.Nocandlewasnowwanted.Thesunwasyetanhourandhalfabovethehorizon.Shefeltthatshehad,indeed,beenthreemonthsthere;andthesun’sraysfallingstronglyintotheparlour,insteadofcheering,madeherstillmoremelancholy,forsunshineappearedtoheratotallydifferentthinginatownandinthecountry.Here,itspowerwasonlyaglare:astifling,sicklyglare,servingbuttobringforwardstainsanddirtthatmightotherwisehaveslept.Therewasneitherhealthnorgaietyinsunshineinatown.
