           Everybodyatalladdictedtoletter-writing,withouthavingmuchtosay,whichwillincludealargeproportionofthefemaleworldatleast,mustfeelwithLadyBertramthatshewasoutofluckinhavingsuchacapitalpieceofMansfieldnewsasthecertaintyoftheGrantsgoingtoBath,occuratatimewhenshecouldmakenoadvantageofit,andwilladmitthatitmusthavebeenverymortifyingtohertoseeitfalltotheshareofherthanklessson,andtreatedasconciselyaspossibleattheendofalongletter,insteadofhavingittospreadoverthelargestpartofapageofherown.ForthoughLadyBertramrathershoneintheepistolaryline,havingearlyinhermarriage,fromthewantofotheremployment,andthecircumstanceofSirThomas’sbeinginParliament,gotintothewayofmakingandkeepingcorrespondents,andformedforherselfaverycreditable,common-place,amplifyingstyle,sothataverylittlematterwasenoughforher:shecouldnotdoentirelywithoutany;shemusthavesomethingtowriteabout,eventoherniece;andbeingsosoontoloseallthebenefitofDr.Grant’sgoutysymptomsandMrs.Grant’smorningcalls,itwasveryharduponhertobedeprivedofoneofthelastepistolaryusesshecouldputthemto.

           Therewasarichamends,however,preparingforher.LadyBertram’shourofgoodluckcame.WithinafewdaysfromthereceiptofEdmund’sletter,Fannyhadonefromheraunt,beginningthus—

           “MyDearFanny,—Itakeupmypentocommunicatesomeveryalarmingintelligence,whichImakenodoubtwillgiveyoumuchconcern”.
