           Edmundhadalreadygonethroughtheserviceoncesincehisordination;anduponthisbeingunderstood,hehadavarietyofquestionsfromCrawfordastohisfeelingsandsuccess;questions,whichbeingmade,thoughwiththevivacityoffriendlyinterestandquicktaste,withoutanytouchofthatspiritofbanterorairoflevitywhichEdmundknewtobemostoffensivetoFanny,hehadtruepleasureinsatisfying;andwhenCrawfordproceededtoaskhisopinionandgivehisownastotheproperestmannerinwhichparticularpassagesintheserviceshouldbedelivered,shewingittobeasubjectonwhichhehadthoughtbefore,andthoughtwithjudgment,Edmundwasstillmoreandmorepleased.ThiswouldbethewaytoFanny’sheart.Shewasnottobewonbyallthatgallantryandwitandgood-naturetogethercoulddo;or,atleast,shewouldnotbewonbythemnearlysosoon,withouttheassistanceofsentimentandfeeling,andseriousnessonserioussubjects.
