           Thecardswerebrought,andFannyplayedatcribbagewithheraunttillbedtime;andasSirThomaswasreadingtohimself,nosoundswereheardintheroomforthenexttwohoursbeyondthereckoningsofthegame—“Andthatmakesthirty-one;fourinhandandeightincrib.Youaretodeal,ma’am;shallIdealforyou?”Fannythoughtandthoughtagainofthedifferencewhichtwenty-fourhourshadmadeinthatroom,andallthatpartofthehouse.Lastnightithadbeenhopeandsmiles,bustleandmotion,noiseandbrilliancy,inthedrawing-room,andoutofthedrawing-room,andeverywhere.Nowitwaslanguor,andallbutsolitude.

           Agoodnight’srestimprovedherspirits.ShecouldthinkofWilliamthenextdaymorecheerfully;andasthemorningaffordedheranopportunityoftalkingoverThursdaynightwithMrs.GrantandMissCrawford,inaveryhandsomestyle,withalltheheighteningsofimagination,andallthelaughsofplayfulnesswhicharesoessentialtotheshadeofadepartedball,shecouldafterwardsbringhermindwithoutmucheffortintoitseverydaystate,andeasilyconformtothetranquillityofthepresentquietweek.

           Theywereindeedasmallerpartythanshehadeverknownthereforawholedaytogether,andhewasgoneonwhomthecomfortandcheerfulnessofeveryfamilymeetingandeverymealchieflydepended.Butthismustbelearnedtobeendured.Hewouldsoonbealwaysgone;andshewasthankfulthatshecouldnowsitinthesameroomwithheruncle,hearhisvoice,receivehisquestions,andevenanswerthem,withoutsuchwretchedfeelingsasshehadformerlyknown.
