           Itwasofgold,prettilyworked;andthoughFannywouldhavepreferredalongerandaplainerchainasmoreadaptedforherpurpose,shehoped,infixingonthis,tobechusingwhatMissCrawfordleastwishedtokeep.MissCrawfordsmiledherperfectapprobation;andhastenedtocompletethegiftbyputtingthenecklaceroundher,andmakingherseehowwellitlooked.Fannyhadnotawordtosayagainstitsbecomingness,and,exceptingwhatremainedofherscruples,wasexceedinglypleasedwithanacquisitionsoveryapropos.Shewouldrather,perhaps,havebeenobligedtosomeotherperson.Butthiswasanunworthyfeeling.MissCrawfordhadanticipatedherwantswithakindnesswhichprovedherarealfriend.“WhenIwearthisnecklaceIshallalwaysthinkofyou,”saidshe,“andfeelhowverykindyouwere.”

           “Youmustthinkofsomebodyelsetoo,whenyouwearthatnecklace,”repliedMissCrawford.“YoumustthinkofHenry,foritwashischoiceinthefirstplace.Hegaveittome,andwiththenecklaceImakeovertoyouallthedutyofrememberingtheoriginalgiver.Itistobeafamilyremembrancer.Thesisterisnottobeinyourmindwithoutbringingthebrothertoo.”

           Fanny,ingreatastonishmentandconfusion,wouldhavereturnedthepresentinstantly.Totakewhathadbeenthegiftofanotherperson,ofabrothertoo,impossible!itmustnotbe!andwithaneagernessandembarrassmentquitedivertingtohercompanion,shelaiddownthenecklaceagainonitscotton,andseemedresolvedeithertotakeanotherornoneatall.MissCrawfordthoughtshehadneverseenaprettierconsciousness.
