           “Weshallbethelosers,”continuedSirThomas.“Hisgoing,thoughonlyeightmiles,willbeanunwelcomecontractionofourfamilycircle;butIshouldhavebeendeeplymortifiedifanysonofminecouldreconcilehimselftodoingless.Itisperfectlynaturalthatyoushouldnothavethoughtmuchonthesubject,Mr.Crawford.Butaparishhaswantsandclaimswhichcanbeknownonlybyaclergymanconstantlyresident,andwhichnoproxycanbecapableofsatisfyingtothesameextent.Edmundmight,inthecommonphrase,dothedutyofThornton,thatis,hemightreadprayersandpreach,withoutgivingupMansfieldPark:hemightrideovereverySunday,toahousenominallyinhabited,andgothroughdivineservice;hemightbetheclergymanofThorntonLaceyeveryseventhday,forthreeorfourhours,ifthatwouldcontenthim.Butitwillnot.Heknowsthathumannatureneedsmorelessonsthanaweeklysermoncanconvey;andthatifhedoesnotliveamonghisparishioners,andprovehimself,byconstantattention,theirwell-wisherandfriend,hedoesverylittleeitherfortheirgoodorhisown.”
