           Hewasinhighspirits,doingeverythingwithhappyease,andpreeminentinallthelivelyturns,quickresources,andplayfulimpudencethatcoulddohonourtothegame;andtheroundtablewasaltogetheraverycomfortablecontrasttothesteadysobrietyandorderlysilenceoftheother.

           TwicehadSirThomasinquiredintotheenjoymentandsuccessofhislady,butinvain;nopausewaslongenoughforthetimehismeasuredmannerneeded;andverylittleofherstatecouldbeknowntillMrs.Grantwasable,attheendofthefirstrubber,togotoherandpayhercompliments.

           “Ihopeyourladyshipispleasedwiththegame.”

           “Ohdear,yes!veryentertainingindeed.Averyoddgame.Idonotknowwhatitisallabout.Iamnevertoseemycards;andMr.Crawforddoesalltherest.”
