           ThiswasexactlywhatSirThomasandEdmundhadbeenseparatelyconnivingat,aseachprovedtotheotherbythesympatheticalacritywithwhichtheybothadvisedMrs.Norris’scontinuingwhereshewas,insteadofrushingoutintothehallassoonasthenoisesofthearrivalreachedthem.

           WilliamandFannysoonshewedthemselves;andSirThomashadthepleasureofreceiving,inhisprotege,certainlyaverydifferentpersonfromtheonehehadequippedsevenyearsago,butayoungmanofanopen,pleasantcountenance,andfrank,unstudied,butfeelingandrespectfulmanners,andsuchasconfirmedhimhisfriend.

           ItwaslongbeforeFannycouldrecoverfromtheagitatinghappinessofsuchanhouraswasformedbythelastthirtyminutesofexpectation,andthefirstoffruition;itwassometimeevenbeforeherhappinesscouldbesaidtomakeherhappy,beforethedisappointmentinseparablefromthealterationofpersonhadvanished,andshecouldseeinhimthesameWilliamasbefore,andtalktohim,asherhearthadbeenyearningtodothroughmanyapastyear.Thattime,however,didgraduallycome,forwardedbyanaffectiononhissideaswarmasherown,andmuchlessencumberedbyrefinementorself-distrust.Shewasthefirstobjectofhislove,butitwasalovewhichhisstrongerspirits,andboldertemper,madeitasnaturalforhimtoexpressastofeel.Onthemorrowtheywerewalkingabouttogetherwithtrueenjoyment,andeverysucceedingmorrowrenewedatete-a-tetewhichSirThomascouldnotbutobservewithcomplacency,evenbeforeEdmundhadpointeditouttohim.
