           “MydearSirThomas!”criedMrs.Norris,redwithanger,“Fannycanwalk.”

           “Walk!”repeatedSirThomas,inatoneofmostunanswerabledignity,andcomingfartherintotheroom.“Myniecewalktoadinnerengagementatthistimeoftheyear!Willtwentyminutesafterfoursuityou?”

           “Yes,sir,”wasFanny’shumbleanswer,givenwiththefeelingsalmostofacriminaltowardsMrs.Norris;andnotbearingtoremainwithherinwhatmightseemastateoftriumph,shefollowedheruncleoutoftheroom,havingstaidbehindhimonlylongenoughtohearthesewordsspokeninangryagitation—
