           Fannywenttohereverytwoorthreedays:itseemedakindoffascination:shecouldnotbeeasywithoutgoing,andyetitwaswithoutlovingher,withouteverthinkinglikeher,withoutanysenseofobligationforbeingsoughtafternowwhennobodyelsewastobehad;andderivingnohigherpleasurefromherconversationthanoccasionalamusement,andthatoftenattheexpenseofherjudgment,whenitwasraisedbypleasantryonpeopleorsubjectswhichshewishedtoberespected.Shewent,however,andtheysaunteredabouttogethermanyanhalf-hourinMrs.Grant’sshrubbery,theweatherbeingunusuallymildforthetimeofyear,andventuringsometimeseventositdownononeofthebenchesnowcomparativelyunsheltered,remainingthereperhapstill,inthemidstofsometenderejaculationofFanny’sonthesweetsofsoprotractedanautumn,theywereforced,bythesuddenswellofacoldgustshakingdownthelastfewyellowleavesaboutthem,tojumpupandwalkforwarmth.

           “Thisispretty,verypretty,”saidFanny,lookingaroundherastheywerethussittingtogetheroneday;“everytimeIcomeintothisshrubberyIammorestruckwithitsgrowthandbeauty.Threeyearsago,thiswasnothingbutaroughhedgerowalongtheuppersideofthefield,neverthoughtofasanything,orcapableofbecominganything;andnowitisconvertedintoawalk,anditwouldbedifficulttosaywhethermostvaluableasaconvenienceoranornament;andperhaps,inanotherthreeyears,wemaybeforgetting—almostforgettingwhatitwasbefore.
