           Fromaboutthetimeofherenteringthefamily,LadyBertram,inconsequenceofalittleill-health,andagreatdealofindolence,gaveupthehouseintown,whichshehadbeenusedtooccupyeveryspring,andremainedwhollyinthecountry,leavingSirThomastoattendhisdutyinParliament,withwhateverincreaseordiminutionofcomfortmightarisefromherabsence.Inthecountry,therefore,theMissBertramscontinuedtoexercisetheirmemories,practisetheirduets,andgrowtallandwomanly:andtheirfathersawthembecominginperson,manner,andaccomplishments,everythingthatcouldsatisfyhisanxiety.Hiseldestsonwascarelessandextravagant,andhadalreadygivenhimmuchuneasiness;buthisotherchildrenpromisedhimnothingbutgood.Hisdaughters,hefelt,whiletheyretainedthenameofBertram,mustbegivingitnewgrace,andinquittingit,hetrusted,wouldextenditsrespectablealliances;andthecharacterofEdmund,hisstronggoodsenseanduprightnessofmind,bidmostfairlyforutility,honour,andhappinesstohimselfandallhisconnexions.Hewastobeaclergyman.
