           “No,sheisquitedetermined.Shecertainlywillnotact.”

           “Oh!verywell.”Andnotanotherwordwassaid;butFannyfeltherselfagainindanger,andherindifferencetothedangerwasbeginningtofailheralready.

           TherewerenotfewersmilesattheParsonagethanattheParkonthischangeinEdmund;MissCrawfordlookedverylovelyinhers,andenteredwithsuchaninstantaneousrenewalofcheerfulnessintothewholeaffairascouldhavebutoneeffectonhim.“Hewascertainlyrightinrespectingsuchfeelings;hewasgladhehaddeterminedonit.”Andthemorningworeawayinsatisfactionsverysweet,ifnotverysound.OneadvantageresultedfromittoFanny:attheearnestrequestofMissCrawford,Mrs.Granthad,withherusualgood-humour,agreedtoundertakethepartforwhichFannyhadbeenwanted;andthiswasallthatoccurredtogladdenherheartduringtheday;andeventhis,whenimpartedbyEdmund,broughtapangwithit,foritwasMissCrawfordtowhomshewasobliged—itwasMissCrawfordwhosekindexertionsweretoexcitehergratitude,andwhosemeritinmakingthemwasspokenofwithaglowofadmiration.Shewassafe;butpeaceandsafetywereunconnectedhere.Hermindhadbeenneverfartherfrompeace.Shecouldnotfeelthatshehaddonewrongherself,butshewasdisquietedineveryotherway.HerheartandherjudgmentwereequallyagainstEdmund’sdecision:shecouldnotacquithisunsteadiness,andhishappinessunderitmadeherwretched.
