           Thedoor,however,provednottobelocked,andtheywereallagreedinturningjoyfullythroughit,andleavingtheunmitigatedglareofdaybehind.Aconsiderableflightofstepslandedtheminthewilderness,whichwasaplantedwoodofabouttwoacres,andthoughchieflyoflarchandlaurel,andbeechcutdown,andthoughlaidoutwithtoomuchregularity,wasdarknessandshade,andnaturalbeauty,comparedwiththebowling-greenandtheterrace.Theyallfelttherefreshmentofit,andforsometimecouldonlywalkandadmire.Atlength,afterashortpause,MissCrawfordbeganwith,“Soyouaretobeaclergyman,Mr.Bertram.Thisisratherasurprisetome.”

           “Whyshoulditsurpriseyou?Youmustsupposemedesignedforsomeprofession,andmightperceivethatIamneitheralawyer,norasoldier,norasailor.”

           “Verytrue;but,inshort,ithadnotoccurredtome.Andyouknowthereisgenerallyanuncleoragrandfathertoleaveafortunetothesecondson.”

           “Averypraiseworthypractice,”saidEdmund,“butnotquiteuniversal.Iamoneoftheexceptions,andbeingone,mustdosomethingformyself.
